The town descended along a steep hillside, so, if one were to approach from the hilltop above, then one could not see even the town's tallest buildings until reaching the hill's crest. The white horse quickened its pace, presumably realizing that it was very nearly home. Lucia asked if this was the case, and Byron assured her that there was a great mansion just a few hundred paces away. Lucia nodded and waited the sight. As they reached the apex of the hill, there it was. A cobblestone main street spilled down the slope, with dozens of little shops and houses placed on either side of it. In fact, the gnarled trees were all the more intimidating by virtue of them still being there, even though both the night and the storm had passed. As the night grew ever colder, she knew had to find somewhere to take shelter.Her first thought was of the farm. The place was familiar and she would be welcome there. Besides, it was relatively nearby and she wanted very much to get out of the cold. She set off towards the farm, although the fearsome winds made the journey quite difficult. As she neared the farmhouse, she heard a frightful cry. It was Hellbred.The beast had gotten out of its stable, likely to investigate the curiously noisy storm. Now it was stranded in the open field with no way to get back inside. Lucia approached carefully. When the beast saw her, it whinnied and kicked, galloping around her in a wide circle. Lucia lowered her hood and showed her face.
